My Story....
From the time I was 8 years old until I was 18, my summers were measured by the Preble County Fair. A whole year of work. Practicing meaningless patterns of circles, straight lines, walk-trot-canter with my pony in the yard when all I wanted was to gallop around the hay fields and go blasting through the woods. Every summer, we took my pony to the fair.
When the air gets impossibly dry and sticky, I can still see a glimpse of bright green corn stalks taller than I, the smell of dusty, crunchy country roads, driving slow behind a tractor. I can still hear the clang of carnival rides, quiet sounds of animals resting, and the calls of the standardbred races or demolition derbies. When I close my eyes, I can still see the whitewashed barns that held hundreds of livestock that belonged to kids whose summers were measured by the Preble County Fair.
15 years removed, every late July, my mind wanders back to the Preble County Fair. The very beginning of the path that led me here.
